An Important Thing About Goals

2014-10-30 (Thursday) by Mikael Linusson

One important thing to remember about goals is that it shouldn't be the goal that matters the most. The goal should only be a pointer, a direction to walk, something to strive towards. The goal should make you live your life and days in a way that you love to live. The goal should give joy to you every day on the journey towards its achievement. Don't put all the happiness in achieving the goal, put the happiness in the working towards the goal.

Don't spend years doing something you hate just to reach a goal. Don't waste life and happiness now in hope of future happiness. Life is now! Life should be fun now!

Set goals that will make you live your life in a way that you truly want to live. Make the actions of today more important than the achievement of a future goal. Set goals and plan the future but remember to live in the now. Remember to have fun and enjoy life in its current moment, i.e. today. Now is the time, the only time you'll ever have.

If you don't enjoy today and tomorrow never comes, then that's it, game over, you lost.

The Leaves Outside My Window

2014-10-14 (Tuesday) by Mikael Linusson

I look out through the window and wonder, how many more times will I see those leaves? I mean really see them, not just look at them. How many more times will I truly savor a moment like this?

Ten? Twenty? Never?

Everything we do in life, we do a limited number of times. Some things we do many many times, some things only a few, a lot of things we never do.

And as I sit here and look at those leaves, at those branches, at that tree, I wonder if this is the first time I've really looked at it. Is this the first time I've ever watched those beautiful autumn colors on that specific tree? Is this the first time in all these years that I've really taken the time to savor this amazing creation that's been standing outside my window for all of the years I've lived here? All the twelve of them.

Will I ever look at that tree the same way again? Or was it the last, and maybe only, time that I truly saw that tree?

Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure, this moment is over and it will never come back. Life rushes on towards the endstation and we better remember that the days in our lives are limited. Not to make us depressed, but to make us use them well. Death isn't the bad part of life, not living while you are alive is.

You get one shot at every day, at every moment, so do your best to enjoy it, to savor it, to have fun.

See you later my beloved friend!

How To Change Your Life

2014-10-07 (Tuesday) by Mikael Linusson

If you really want to change your life then it's not enough to read about it and think about it. It's most often not even enough to change how you think and what you think. You have to change how you act, how you behave, what you do. You have to be the change you wish to see in your life.

Life won't change until you change. Or well, it might change anyway, but probably not in the direction that you are hoping for. And instead of waiting for things to change, go out and change them yourself.

You can choose to keep on being as you've always been and to keep on doing what you are already doing, but if you aren't getting the results you want then you better start changing.

Changes in your life comes from you changing things. If you change how you behave, how you act, what you do, what you say, and so on, then things will begin to change.

If You...

If you change how you are and how you treat other people, then other people will change how they are towards you and how they treat you.

If you change what you learn, or start to learn something at all, that could have a massive impact on your life. What skills and/or knowledge could really help you on your journey through life?

If you begin to give love instead of trying to get love, that will bring you more love than you could ever dream of.

If you greet everyone you meet with a smile and some kind words you will soon be met by kind words and smiles everywhere you go.

If you want to have more friends, be a friend, be as the friends you want to have. Don't try to get friendship, instead, aim to give it.

If you want to write a book, then you need to start writing, one word at a time, one sentence after another, one page, then one more page, then another page after that, and so on.

That's how the world works and it applies to anything. What you do, the way you behave, that's what determines most of your future.

Thunderbird places.sqlite 10 MB Size Fix

2014-10-03 (Friday) by Mikael Linusson

I'm using my Thunderbird remotely over a network and didn't like the fact that the places.sqlite always defaults to 10 MB. I searched for a solution to make its default size smaller, but couldn't find any working solutions. And every time I removed the file it got recreated but I finally found a solution that seems to work.

The Solution

This is my solution to the unnecessary big places.sqlite file in Thunderbird.

1. Close Thunderbird
2. Go to your Thunderbird profile directory
3. Remove the places.sqlite file
4. Create a folder / directory with the exact same name, i.e. places.sqlite
5. Start Thunderbird again

Now Thunderbird can't recreate the file because there is already a folder occupying its name. It might not be the most beautiful solution, but it did work for me and I haven't noticed any strange side effects.

If you get an error or something (I didn't) go into Preferences, Advanced Tab, Config Editor and make sure that places.history.enabled is set to false.

BTW, don't do this on your Firefox profile, you more or less need the places.sqlite file there. :)

20 Things I Wish I Knew When I Was Twenty

2014-07-21 (Monday) by Mikael Linusson

This is not by far a complete list and it is quite silly to wish that things should have been different in the past. But to be honest I mostly wrote this list to give you all a few great guidelines about live that I recommend that you think through.

So here is a list of things I wish I knew and truly understood when I was 20. Things I wish I had implemented and lived by. They aren't ordered in any special order.

I wish I knew that...

1. ...taking your health seriously and exercising and eathing healthy is the wise thing to do.

2. can be, do, and have more or less anything in life if you only help enough other people get what they want.

3. ...having goals, making detailed step by step plans, and taking action is how you get things done in life.

4. ...the best way to make money is to create value for other people. To help and entertain, to be of service, to create value.

5. ...saving money is a really smart thing to do if you intend to become a millionaire, become financially free, or just to be able to sleep better at night. Save at least 10% of your income. If you can't save that much then save as much as you can. And don't spend those savings, like ever.

6. ...reading personal development books is a great thing to do. At least a few really great ones.

7. can learn more or less anything you want if you just put enough time in.

8. ...people will like you a lot more if you are a nice and loving person who gives love instead of trying to get it. No one likes needy and/or demanding people.

9. better accept 100% responsibilty for what's going on in your life. You can't always control what happens to you, but you can control how you react and what you do about it. By accepting the responsibility you give yourself the power to change things, which is way better than playing some silly blame game and behaving like a loser.

10. can program and reprogram yourself, for example through the use of affirmations. Which means that it is up to you to become the kind of person you truly want to be.

11. get rid of your fears by doing the things you fear. Avoiding them will only hold you back.

12. ...there is something called a comfort zone and you better do whatever you can to expand it as much as you can. Growing as a human being is an amazing thing to do.

13. ...having less things is a really great thing. It is a kind of freedom and it makes it way easier to keep everything in order. Cleaning your home is so much more fun when you don't have things spread out all over the place. With less things there is no need to declutter a lot every time you clean.

14. become what you think about, i.e. you are where you are in life because of the thoughts you have thought up until this moment, and in the future you will be where you are because of the thoughts you think from now on. This is the famous Law of Attraction, which no one gets away from. Like attracts like, so think and behave in a way that is a good match with what you want in life. Always remember: Your thoughts can either be your best friend or your worst enemy depending on how you use them. So use them wisely.

15. ...failure is the way we learn. It's okay to fail. It's human nature, you are supposed to do it. The same thing goes for making mistakes, learn from them and get on with your life.

16. don't need to drink a lot of alcohol to have fun. In fact, you don't need to drink any at all.

17. ...having a todo lists and organizing your life would simplify your life and free up your mind to think about more important things. As a bonus it also helps you not miss anything important.

18. ...moods are contagious. If you are seeing a lot of grumpy people everywhere then maybe, just maybe, you should check to see what kind of mood you yourself are in.

19. better learn to think positive. Positive thoughts isn't the solution to everything and every problem in life, but it is always better and more effective than negative thoughts.

20. can come a long way with a smile and some nice words. And don't forget to be respectful and friendly, it's actually really fun.
